El Caminito del Rey - "The world's most dangeurous hike" ... go for it!
El Caminito del Rey is a walkway, pinned along the steep walls of a narrow gorge in El Chorro, one hour and a half from our apartment at La Finca. The path is hanging in the air and it is built on the walls of the gorge. Some of its walls are more than 300 metres high and less than 10 metres wide. The most incredible form is the one of the vertical sharp limestone stratification made by the river.
The path was built in 1905 to provide workers at the hydroelectric power plants at Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls with a means to cross between them, to provide for transport of materials, and to facilitate inspection and maintenance of the channel.
In 1999 and 2000, there were many hikers who suffered mortal accidents and the walk became known as the "world's most dangerous walkway". As a consequence the path was closed for 10 years. Unfortunately despite the government closing of the two entrances until 2013 still some hikers died attempting to do the walk.
In February 2014 the restoration works started and the Caminito del Rey re-opened last 28/03/2015.
In one single year since the reopening more than 300.000 people have (safely) visited El Caminito del Rey. A huge success taking into consideration that the access is limited to about 1.100 visitors per day.
The total length of the walk is of 7.7 km linear, not circular. There are frequent coaches to get the visitors back to the starting point. The visit must be booked well in advance since the number of visitors per day is limited.
Do you feel the thrill of doing the "world's most dangerous hike"? Take advantage when you stay at La Finca, it is a one hour and half beautiful drive to the mountains.
